- - * EXAMINATIONS FOR UNREGISTERED ASSISTANTS.

WELLINGTON, March 6

Tli© Dentists’ Amendment Act, passed last session, provides for two examinations for unregistered dental assistants desiring to register; one a general knowledge examination prescribed and conducted by the Minister of Health and Minister of Education, a.nd the second an examination in dentistry and dental surgery .prescribed and conducted by the Senate of the New Zealand University. Both examinations are to be held in December. 1022 and 1923. No person will be entitled to sit for a dentistry examination unless be gives notice to the Director of Health before April 30th., that he has been engaged in dental work for four years, of which two have been spent in the performance of surgical dental operations. The Minister, the Hon. J. Barr, stated to-day that it had been decided: —fl) That applicants who satisfy the Education Department that they have already passed Standard VI. or its equivalent-, will he accepted as having fulfilled the requirements of Section 7 (b). (2) That the senior inspector of schools in each education district will, he instructed to arrange for the examination at times specified in Sub-section (2) of all candidates who do not possess the necessary certificate of general attainment, and that this examination would be of the following nature:—(a) An examination in reading; (b) written examination in composition to include the writing of an essnv and sud. practical exercises as bear most inimately on the writing and speaking of correct English. No question in formal grammar to he set. (c) Test in dictation and spelling, (d) Written examination of a very general character in arithmetic to include mental calculations and knowledge of the commonest tables of weights and measures. (e) Written examination m general elementary knowledge of geography and history.
