STAFFORD NEWS.

(Our own Correspondent.)

Although the weather on Saturday evening was wet and boisterous, a fair number representing the district from Awatuna to Goldsborough, met at the Stafford Literary Institute to make arrangements for a send-off and presentation to Mr and Mrs George Linklater prior to their leaving the district to reside at Hokitika. - After discussing the matter of ways and means it was unanimously decided that the social be held in Turner’s Hall on Tuesday evening, March 14th. The ladies present kindly undertook to arrange for the refreshments, and Mr W. Blackmun offered the loan of Ms piano for the occasion. The Chairman (Mr Sandle) was requested to write to Mrs Stewart and Miss Larcombe, Goldsborough, for their valuable services as pianists; to Mr It. Roberts, M.C., and others for assistance in carrying out the dancing part of tble programme. The Treasurer (Mr B. Turner) stated that a liberal response had so far Been made towards the funds needed. Mr Turner also made a very liberal offer for the use of his'hall, wliich was thankfully accepted. The Chairman was authorised to have advertisements inserted in the “Guardian” and Greymouth Evening Star, and act, with any members near at hand, in carrying out details. This district will suffer the loss of one of its most energetic public men by the departure of Mr Linklater, as he has . at all times been assiduous in furthering the best interests of all public and patriotic affairs, and in private matters has always been ready to lend a helping hand.
