“THE VICTIM” TO-NIGHT,
To-night Pollards have pleasure in presenting to a Hokitika audience the picture sensation of the year, “The Victim,” featuring Robert T. Haines who plays the part of Father Cosgrove, the priest whose lips were'sealed even unto death because he would not break his vows. “Guilty, sentenced to death,” and he walked out to pay to the law U e dread penalty it exacted for the commission of murder —yet lie was innocent, and, had he spoken one word, only one word, it would have saved him. Yet Father Cosgrove was silent. Why? Because lie would not break his Vows, and reveal what had been told him under 'the seal of the confessional. Truth is stranger than, fiction, and this is a true story. From the first moment of the story’s flashing upon the screen, the interest of “The Victim” with Robert T. Haines in the role of Father Cosgrove, steadlv rises to a point at which the suspense becomes well-nigh hysterical. This story is a complete vindication of the oft doubted statement that truth is stranger than fiction, for here is' a picture whose sensational story is based "entirely on true happenings and, seldom, if ever, lias any screen production so strongly gripped the interest and imagination of an audience, as this one does. Its lesson is pointel, in the Ihith to his ideals and vows of the priest who faces death, and a dishonourable one at that, sooner than break faith and reveal what has been entrusted to him in the sacred seal of the confessional. Suffice it to say that this picture for a fortnight packed Sydney’s largest theatres five times a day. There is the verificaton of the statement that the production has qualities of interest that are seldom seen on the screen. A Rathe Gazette and a clever “Snooky” comedy “Beat It,” will complete one of the best programmes ever shown in Hokitika.
