NEIiSON RACES. NELSON, March 4. The concluding day of the Nelson Jockey Club’s races was held in splendid weather, with a large attendance. The totalisator took £17,446, as against £20,566 last year, making £27,469 for the meeting compared with £37, 207 last year. Trial Handicap.—Stream 1, Redsome 2, Maropa 3. Won by a length. Time 1.6. Matai Handicap Trot.-Disappear-ance 1, Maheno 2, Tawera 3. Won

VICTORIAN RACING CLUB. MELBOURNE, March 5. The weather was dull for the opening of the V.R.C. Autumn Meeting and the going was dead. There was a large attendance. Finishing with a good run, Stall won the hurdles race brilliantly from Merry Bob. Both horses are owned and trained in Adelaide. Heir Apparent led for six furlongs in the St. Leger Stakes,, then Harvest King made the pace. Furious went to the front at the distance and won brilliantly. Lewis rode his sixth St Leger winner. In this race hi s success was loudly cheered. The favourite David ran a bad race in Essendon Stakes and finished, eighth. Stare who was lying fourt 11 early in the race, led into the straight and won well. Dempsey" was cheered for riding the winner. Stare is engaged in the Australian Cup. There was great excitement in the Newmarket Handicap. The favourite Rostrum near the rails, was always prominent, and won brilliantly. Whiz Bang was a good second! with Lisnavane, who was an early leader, third. Solfanello held the outside position, and was never dangerous. Rostrum ran second last year. He cost his owners £SOO in June. His rider, Sleigh, heads the Melbourne winning jockeys’ list. Eurythmic was well up early in tlie race, but was never dangerous in the last half and could do no better than run tenth. Scarlet was sixth early in the Sires Produce Stakes, but finishing with a great run won brilliantly. Pines Hurdle Race-Stall 1, Merry . Bob 2, Front Rank 3. Won by a length, three lengths between second and third. Time 3.47 J). St Leger Stakes—Furious 1, Harvest King 2, Heir Apparent' 3. Won by half a length. Time 3.9}. (Essendon Stakes.—Stare 1, Tangalooma 2, Sister Olive 3. Won by half a length. Time 2.7}. Newmarket Handicap—Rostrum 1> Whiz Bang 2. Lianavane 3. Won by three quarters of a length. Time 1.14}.
