CHARGES OF THEFT.

TIMARU, Feb. 28. A domestic servant named Edna Alma. Hunt, aged 18 pleaded guilty at the Temuka. Magistrate’s Court to-day to charges of breaking, entering, and steal ing goods (chiefly wearing apparel)' to the value of £3O from the house of John Davev, farmer, in the Rangitira Valley, dnrinn; the absence of the occupiers on Sunday morning, 18th inst.. also to a similar offence in similar circumstances from the farm-house of Frank Green, in the same district on January 2nd. of stealing goods valued at £26; and further with setting fire to a dwelling which was burped down with its contents valued ait £IO6O. It was insured foil £SOO. V
The girl packed the articles and sent them by post to her sister in Pleasant Valley. The suspicions of the police were aroused bjf a constable seeing the parcels posted ht a rural mail box. Following these, lie discovered articles reported to have been stolen from both dwellings. * : ; The girl, in a statement said she did not know why she did such things, hut always realised her wrong afterwards. A third charge of theft from her employer was dealt wifti summarily. On the others the. accused was remanded to the Supreme Court, without bail, Mr Mosley. S.M. saying that she was not fit to l>e at large. Walter Garwood .purchase clerk, at the Court. Temuka. pleaded guilty to charges of fraudulently converting to his own use 17s. a' fine and 2s as a olnint fee, paid to him. In reply to the charge, accused said his wife had been ill in bed and had left throe children. He was short of money and took these sums, meaning to return them. He was fined £lO on each charge, with costs, a total of £27.
