Student Burglar.

DAWKINS SENTENCED. ■ WELLINGTON, Feb. 25

Charles Campbell Dawkins, the young Victoria College student, who i caused a sensation in Wellington a little over a month ago by confessing to a number of burglaries in Wellington, Auckland and Christchurch, arid an assault oil Dr 1\ F. M’Evedy, Wellington, was sentenced by Mr Justice Husking to-day The charges to which Dawkins pleaded guilty totalled thirty's even of breaking and entering and theft, one of theft, and one of causiim actual bodily harm. Mr Macassev, the Crown Prosecutor, reviewed the offences. He stated that the attack on Dr M’Evedy was deliberate and murderous. Prisoner had been examined by medical men, who were of opinion that he was very intelligent and was not suffering from any delusion? or mental deficiencies.

Counsel for prisoner suggested that Hie case was one of the most remarkable that had ever come before the Court. He referred to prisoner’s respectable upbringing, the fact that lie had served on Gallipoli and that until July of last year he had borne an unblemished record, but for some unexplainable reason he had commenced a career of crime.

Prisoner was sentenced to two years’ hard labour on the assault charge, eighteen months on each charge of breaking and entering, and three months for theft, these sentences to be concurrent and to he followed by four years’ reformative detention.
