The Methodist Conference lvcjuiv d deputations from the Anglican and Presbyterian Churches, bearing felicitations on the work of the century; also expressing goodwill and fellowship. The speakers all expressed a desire for unity of churches in confronting the problems of the day, saying that this would strengthen the desire for closer union.
A discussion on the spiritual aspect of the churches’ activities was opened by Rev H. E. Bellhouse, who spoke on the call of the future.
Rev John Dawson, delegate of the redent Ecumenical Methodist Conference in London, spoke on the work of that gathering. The report of the literature committee showed that the “Methodist Times” had an inreasing circulation, and, during the year, had paid its way. The resignation of the Rev W. J. Williams was received with regret, and a cordial tribute was paid to bim for his distinguished service as editor over a p.’riod of 18 years. Rev J. Napier Milne was appointed editor, and Rev P. R. Paris, associate.
Rev Rugby Pratt introduced a report of the wtelfare of the church. The committee decided to publish a book of responsive services, and a special committee was set up to compile same. A revision of tWe book of offies was also decided upon.
The question of Bible teaching in schools was brought before the Conference by Mr J. C. Prudhoe, Christchurch, in a resolution suggesting Bible teaching by teachers with a conscience clause, both for teachers and parents, and without the right of entry by the clergy ; lesson books to he prepared by Representatives of the Education Board and the churches.
