Captain Hugh l). Hamilton, tiio iccently appointed Cluei Stall' Officer to tlie New Zealand Naval force, has armed in Wellington, and will take over from Captain Thomas A. Williams, C.JJ.E,. who lias performed the duties ever sinwe New ZeaJand has had its own ships. Captain Hamilton, who received his promolam a little over a year ago, has lately been studying at the senior officers’ technical course at Portsmouth. Jle has also taken the war course at Greenwich. When promoted from gun-nery-lieutenant to commander in June, 1915, he became executive officer ip the battleship Belleroplion, which served in the Grand f leet, and was at the Jutland Battle. From 1918 to' 1920 lie vas Hag commander to Admiral Sir Loveton Sturdee, who years ago in the South Pacific, as captain of the Por.poise, Look an active and a- prominent part in the Samoan rebellion, when the German population were anti-Bri-tish in thought, if not in action. Ip the Great War, Sturdee had the satisfaction of sinking the German Squadron at the Falklands. After the war he became Coininqnqer-iu-Chief at the Nore, and it was theie that Captain Hamilton served as hjs flag-commander. Captain Hamilton’s new post carries with it membership of the New Zealand Naval Board, which was created nearly a year ago to administer the affairs of the new force.
