DROWNING FATALITY. BRISBANE, Feb. 27. While a, party was returning from a picnic in a launch on tlio Brisbam river on Sunday night, the awning on which they were sitting collapsed. Most of them were thrown into the water and Rita Gilling, Leonard Grozier, and William McGuire, all of whom were single, wore drowned.
ECONO-MIC CONFERENCE. SYDNEY, Feb. 27. The Economic Conference here has resumed. Mr Brooks, for the Employers’ Federation, suggested they have a general discussion on tiie economic and industrial situation in Australia, with an adjournment to permit each side to submit proposals, in writing, which would then become the subject for discussion,
Mr Garden, of the Trades and Labour Council, speaking in reply, said that be believed that there was a paradise ahead for workers, hut there was a long, bloody road to travel, before tliey got there. The solution of the present economic trouble, he said, rested with those who controlled the means of industry.
The Conference adjourned until tomorrow.
MINING AWARD

Justice Powers refused an application by Wallaroo Moonta mining company to reduce the award in some places 10s weekly and added that employees had already made an extraordinarily fair offer and no doubt would further meet employers, if ne-c-esary, for the carrying on of the mines.

GUI, LETT-HUGHES SQ UA BE L'E. MELBOURNE, Feh. 28 Mr Gullett replying to Mr Hughes, stated the latter had realt a staggering blow to immigration when lie (Air Hughes) took over the department. He added that it was impossible to interview Mr Hughes, he .was always so busy whenever he had time to do anything.
