RIMUTAKA INCLINE FIRE. WELLINGTON, Feb. .27
In a big fire in the engine shed at Cross Creek at the foot of Rimuiakn incline, four engines were badly damaged and it will be some months befofic they are repaired. The shed was destroyed and also a quantity of stores. Some brake vans were saved. The origin is unknown. There will he no dis-. location of traffic, as replacements were secured from Napier and other stations. I OBITUARY. WELLINGTON, Feb. 27. A deputation from the Auckland Railways League waited on the Hon J. G. Coatjes urging construction of the AVaihi-Tauranga line on which Waihi miners who are unemployed could he engaged. The Alinister, replying, said that it could not he sound business to change over from the Taneatua section, because tho latter would open up country as far as Opotiki and traffic from Gisborne and permit traffic by sea from Tauranga. He was avoiding expenditure on bridges and buildings as much as possible as money so spent would largely go out.of the country. No one knew what the position Regarding unemployment would be this winter and his endeavour was to make provision in, that direction. People were complaining about the number of votes on tlie estimates for railway construction. As a matter of fact there were but three lines which should he proceeding at present, north Auckland, South Island midland and Waiknkopu brnnth.
