He was the last survivor of the Battle of Balaclava. He was operated on in 1920. on account of wounds which lie icceived in the Charge of the Light Brigade.

Sir Eric Geddes’ Committee regarding the pay of Navy, Army police and other state' employees numbering nearly.a million and a quarter, points out the pay of the fighting forces, teachers and police was fixed in 1916 under quito abnormal circumstances. The country cannot continue to support the burden of this magnitude. It does not make any recommendation, but suggests a thorough special investigation by the most expeditious ami authoritative means available. The comittee is convinced great economics can he realised in tlie lighting services, it the Iroas,try’s control over them is vastly increased, and brought up to the standard obtaining in civil departments. The Committee concludes that it believes the reductions proposed are retainable if. the Departments Act promptly on the lines suggested, with a determination to cllect economies. We do not lay claim to infallibility ot judgment, but the report is a unanimous recommendation of live men of goodwill, desirous of advising how tl-p National Budget can host be balanced.
