A ten thousand pounds pearl ought to he enough to make anybody’s eyes sparkle with admiration, and when Mr Jaimes Clark, the well-known Queensland millionaire, with big interests in pearling, pastoral properties. and blood-stock, produced such a remarkable gem some months ago at the Federal Taxation Commission’s enquiry, it caused a mild sensation (says the “Sydney Daily Telegraph”). One of them hit him on the head,; and he had remembered nothing till he was found. He had apparently been lying in the street for about two and a half hours, and was suffering from exposure. He was taken to the Auckland Hospital being discharged on Wednesday morning. In the meantime, inquiries b.V the police showed that while the lad had been at> bis place of employment the previous evening, having been sent there, he had no business to be, at work. The youth subsequently admitted to Detective-Sergeant Hammond that the “assualt” was a “put-up job,” and that he had not been attacked.
