At the Town Hall .to-morrow night the Hon H. L. Michel M.L.C., will deliver a very interesting lecture on t.ie islands of the Pacific visited by the Parliamentary party last year. Mr Michel was one of the touring party, and will bo able to give a very vivid account of the happenings. About 100 scenic views will he shown of places visited during the tour.
The hero of the Coogee shark fatality, Mr Jack Chalmers, who valiantly dragged young Coughlan from the giip of the man-eater, is a native of Wellington. His father, Air Jack Chalmers, was a well-known first-class racing track cyclist, whose forte was handicap ridin*?, and in t-his he was at his prime in Australia about twenty years ago. when lie raced under the cashamateurism of the League of AAHieelmon.
After a lengthy debate on the question of forcing Mr Beban, lessee, to grant more reasonable terms for use of the Town Hall, Greymouth, to the Olrautaquia Committee, Greymouth Borough Council acted on the suggestion of Or Skoglund that the parties adjourn and later announced that an agreement had been arrived at, Mr Beban to receive £27 10s for three nights and afternoons except Saturday afternoon, which he claimed for a picture matinee. The best offer from Mr Beban previously was £4O, for three nights and afternoons, including light, or £32 10s excluding Saturday afternoon.
The ‘Westport News” says: A very large grey rat, measuring 22 inches from the tip of nose to the tip of tail, was.caught in AA’estport on Friday and cremated at the Gas works on Saturday morning. The rat was well covered with fleas, the vermin showing up when it was dipped in a solution of disinfectant. Another rat was caught, not a thousand yards from Palmerston street, and when examined was found to be alive with lice. It is up to residents to try and use every means to battle against the rat pest, in setting traps and laying poison where rats or mice are known to exist.
