N.Z.R.S.A.

WELLINGTON, Feb. 20. The Dominion Executive of the New Zealand R.S.A., sent a letter towards the end of last year to one settler on each of the bigger soldier settlements throughout New Zealand. Replies, which totalled 39, are described by the Executive as “fairly optimistic.” Each settler was asked to state (a) how he was getting on; (b) how he was being treated by the department; (c) his complaints, if any; (d) his suggestions for the betterment of soldier settlers.

The inquiries were intended to provide first-hand information for the Dominion Executive. From close scrutiny of the replies, states the Executive, it must be conceded that as,a whole our soldier settlers are progressing as favourably as can be expected, with the fluctuating markets, and receiving considerate treatment from. the Lands Department. The majority of the replies contain no complaints. Some complain of a lack of roads and high rent. Dipton (Southland) settlement complained that they were just slaves for the Government. Some of the settlements appear to be very dirty.
