I. V 1 I'ER I'lt ESS ASSOCIATION J CIVIL SERVANT’S THEFT. COMMITTED FOR SENTENCE. WELLINGTON, Feb. 15. Charged with the theft of £79 belonging to the New Zealand Government, Arthur G.. Laurenson, who for some time held the position of manager of the State firewood depot, and had lately been acting-manager of the State coal depot, appeared at the -Magistrate Court to-day. k Alfred Henry Kimball, under-secre- ~ tary of the Mines Department, said on January 25th 1922, he received a letter from accused explaining the deficiency that had occured, and asking for lenient treatment, Charles Gair, audit inspector, ’ said on January 18th while auditing the books of the City Council, he discovered a voucher for firewood supplied by the Government firewood depot. The voucher had been receipted, but no official receipt was attached. As a result he ..made an examination of the firewood depot books, and discovered that a cheque paid by the City Council had not been entered in the cash book. Witness later discovered that other cheques had not been entered. Accused pleaded guilty to the charge, and was committed to the Supreme—'" Court for sentence.
