[by TELEGRAPH —PER PRESS ASSOCIATION] WOMAN’S SUICIDE. MARTON, February 14. Mary Needham ,a single woman, and a recent arrial from Marton, suicided by cutting her throat. The deceased, whose relatives live in Queensland was formerly an officer of the Salvation Army in the South Island. She resigned owing to a breakdown in health. A WANGANUI CASE. WANGANUI, February 14. Matthew Mulcaliy, a young farmer <pleaded guilty at the Magistrate’s Court to stealing 200 sheep in April last at Ruatiti. His partner, David Hyde, also pleaded guilty to receiving the sheep knowing they were stolen. Both men were committed to the Supreme Court for sentence.
A BROKEN ENGAGEMENT. CHARGE OF ATTEMPTED SHOOTING. CHRISTCHURCH, Feb. 14. At the Supreme Court, charges were preferred against Oscar Trice, of having, at Kaituna,, on October 22nd, attempted to discharge a, loaded gun at Albert Newton and Annie Duncan, with intent to do grievous bodily barm and of having assaulted each of the parties named. Accused was engaged to the girl, but she broke it off, because of his jealousy. On October 22nd Newton and Miss Duncan were sitting at tea, when the accused entered the room and persented a. gun at the girl. Newton took the weapon away from him, and found that the accused had attempted to discharge it. Accused was .peculiar in his manner, but not irresponsible. j Counsel for accused said that accused was a man of poor mentality, and it would be a, hard task to prove that be bad a guilty intention in his mind, when he appeared in the room with tlq, gun. The jury after an hour’s retirement "brought in a verdict of guilty of assault by pointing the gun at Miss Duncan. Sentence was deferred until tomorrow. “CROWN AND ANCHOR.” WOODVILLE, Eeb. 14. I John Stanley Lloyd was fined £lO in court this morning on a charge of playing “crown and anchor” at the Woodville Show. Jt was pointed out that the Agricultural and Pastoral Associations and the police are determined to put this evil down. CRUISER MELBOURNE LEAVES. INVERCARGILL, Fob. I I.
The cruiser Melbourne sailed for Hobart to-night. The cruiser berthed at Bluff wharf at low water, coming up the harbour without a pilot. She left under the same conditions.
SUDDEN DEATH. INVERCARGILL, Eeb. 14 J. M. .Marshall, aged 72, a farmci of Spar Bush, expired suddenly while in a shop in town this morning. He l ad suffered from heart disease. The annual report was adopted. It was resolved that the next conic reno be held at Wanganui. Mr W. S. Dustin was nominated unopposed as next President of the _ Association. MAN DROWNED. PALMERSTON N. Fob. 15. William Arthur Longworth, a storekeeper and mail contractor, of Ashhurst was drowned yesterday afternoon in the Mnnnwntu River near the entrance to the gorge. While bathing with two companions he suddenly disappeared. The body was recovered. DEATH FROM ACCIDENT. PALMERSTON N., Feb. 15. Cyril Edwards, injured in a. collision on Bunnythorpo-Feilding road on Jan. 25th, died at the hospital last night.

The Master Bakers’ Conference carried a resolution that it be a recommendation to the incoming executive to get into touch with the Minister of Agriculture with regard to the growing of a better selection of wheat for milling.
