Four married men working in a tunnel at the North Goulbiirn quarry were poisoned bv fumes, probably due to a mixture of chlorate of potash and almond pil, which is used for explosive purposes. John McCafroti died after admission to the hospital. Herbert Paproth, Frederick Bank mo re, and Frank Holdbefg are seriously ill.

EMIGRANTS AND CREW. SYDNEY. Feb. 14.. A batch of immigrants arrived in the Commonwealth Line steamer Largs Bay. Tlie Welfare Officer, interviewed, stated tliiit some people secured a free passage wlio were never entitled to it, as they had no intehtioii of going on fai'ins. One man was racehorse owner, and another accepted a post in the Perth University. One young lady had' seventy drosses and golf sticks. The immigration authorities ridicule the statement, and explain that the officer has been"hoaxed. Members of the Largs Bay crew, who wore deemed ineligible, take the ship hack to England, because they are not members of the Australian union. The crew are indignant and threaten to boycott all Australian seamen visiting England.
