lUSTRALIAN AND N.Z. CABLE ASSOCIATION. OPENING THE MINES, (Received This Dav at 8 a.m.) CAPETOWN, Feb. 13. Work has re-started on the goldfields. There was only a. small resumption. A thousand natives are working in the' underground village. Forty stamp are going in Durban deep, but it is regarded as promising that few strikers have resumed. Police arrested pickets in the village deep, otherwise everything is quiet. So far there lias been no resumption on East Rand.

POOR RESPONSE. (Received This Day at 12.25 p.m.) CAPETOWN, Feb. 13. Very few men responded to the appeal to return to work at the go’ > mines, which are heavily picketed. As a result of the rejection of Premier Smuts’ proposals it is feared the strike is entering a more serious stage.

MORE LEADERS ARRESTED. CAPETOWN, February 13. The Pretoria Supreme Court refused the appliation for the release on bail of Shaw and four other strike leaders arrested on the Btn. Boy dell, a Leader of the Lalwur Party, is the latest to he arrested. The men are preparing for a three months’ strike.
