THE POPE’S CORONATION. ROME, February 12. The new Pope was crowned at St. Peters. It was an impressive and splendid spectacle. (Received This Lav at 10,15 a.m.) ROME, Feb. 12. An elaborate coronation ceremonial occupied five hours, the Pope showing considerable fatigue towards the close. Eighty thousand people assembled at St Peters. Many women fainted in the crush. The Pope was borne above the heads of the people on a sedia gestatoria. ! e received the adoration of the Cardinals and other dignitaries. A Solemn Mass was celebrated and then a tiaia was placed on his Holiness’s head by Cardinal Bisletti.

A procession of Cardinals end one hundred Bishops preceded the Pope up the principal aisle. A disappointing feature of the ceremony was the lack of modem music. The simple, plain chant used sounded melancholy and) lugubrious instead of cheerful and inspiring. The most important feature was the blessing, which the Pope, surrounded by fifty-five cardinals, gave from an external balcony. The method was unprecedented since 1816.
