AUSTRALIAN AND N.Z. CARLE ASSOCIATION. UNEMPLOYMENT. LONDON, Feb. 9. In the House of Commons on the resumption of the address in reply debate, the Labour amendment (cabled on February 7) was debated. Dr F. J. Mac-namara detailed various schemes to relieve unemployment in the autumn, which schemes were now employing 126,003 workers. Dealing with the Labour critics lie asked why the Labourites refused the Government’s invitation asking their party’s help 13 months ago. GIIANDI’S ARREST- IMMINENT. IMPRISONMENT WITHOUT TRIAL POSSIBLE. LONDON, Feb 9. '[’he Australian Press Association understands that Ghandi’s arrest is imminent. The Government of India realises that 'there is no hope of any improvement in the situation unless the most prominent wire puller behind all the politicians is removed. It is not yet known whether he will he deported under the famous ordinance of 1919, empowering the Viceroy to incarcerate potential law breakers without trial, or whether he will he arrested and tried as seditionist.
GENOA CONFERENCE. FRANCE’S MOVE. PARIS, Feb. 9. Premier Poincaire, addressing the Foreign Affairs Commission of the Chamber, said that he had asked the Allied Governments to postpone the Genoa conference for three months, because a postponement was essential to arrange a detailed programme necessary for such a conference. He added that it was unnecessary to go to Genoa before June, otherwise the idea would be given up. ASSTSTING FMTGR ATTON. (Received This Day at 9.5 n.m.) LONDON, Feb. 9. Hon Churchill replying to a deputation, pledged Government financial cooperation with the Dominions in establishing permanent, continuous emiorntion. Ho hoped to pass a Bill dealing with the subject flu's session.
