In connection with the Wataroa-Wai-tangi race meeting on February 23rd. Mr J. Butler has donated a very handsome cup to be presented to the winner of the Wataroa Handicap.
Residents of Wataroa anticipate a big meeting on the 23rd. Almost every day local sports are on the training track. The Committee are making very thorough arrangements; and patrons may rely on all their requirements being attended to on the course.
For the month of January the Blackwater Mines, Ltd., crushed 2909 tons of -stone for a yield of 1187 fine, ozs of gold; value £5637, working expenses, £4506, capital and development £670, working profit £ll3l, not profit £461! The gold is estimated at £-1 15s per fine ounce.
Although the police have the matter under observation, no fresh developments have been revealed in connection with the recent shooting affray at Kaiata. What might have been another serious drowning accident occurred the other evening* when two Greymduth men were trying their hands at sculling. All went well until Preston Road was reached, when the boat capsized, throwing them into the water. They are none the worse for their wetting, although they lost several personal assets. —“Argus.’
The revival of cycling races on Cass Square has received the hearty approval of the general public, judging from the very large crowd that gathered last evening at 7 o’clock to witness tile race for lads under 18 years of age over a two miles course that had been arranged by the newly formed Cycling Club. Tlie race resulted:—R. Haussrnann 1, D. Adamson 2, W. Gooch 3. There were nine starters. Adamson led for most of the distance, until the last half-lap when Haussmann passed him with a fine spurt, and ran home an easy winner by over 20 lengths.

Advice lias been received that the Hon J. G. Coates, Minister of Public Works and Postmaster-General, is to make a complete tour of the West Coast of this Island, starting from Nelson down to Jackson Bay. Mr i Coates and his party, which it is ex- J pected will include Mr Furkert, tho j Engineer-in-Chief, will leave Wellington , for Nelson about 27th February. From Nelson the party will travel via Motueka to Karamea, and thence to Westport. From Westport the party will move to Greymouth via .Barrytown. Leaving Greymouth by rail u visit is to 1m? paid by rail to Qtira, and from thence by road to Hokitika. From Hokitika the Minister will visit Lake Kanieri, then on to Waitaha Settlement, and from thence to Hari Hari. Tlie next day will be devoted to Wataroa, Okarito and Waihc Gorge. South { of there, horses will be used, and tlie journey will be made by stages to Jackson Bay, and from thence across the l-Tnust Pass to Otago. It is a good round journey, but an eminently necessary one for the Minister to see the hack country.
