. STRIKE HAPPENINGS. CAPETOWN, February 7. Orders have been issued to Commandos to observe to-day as a truce of God. owing to General de Wet’s funeral at Bloemfontein. It is reported a movement has begun to form a new organisation with a view to breaking away from the Miners Union and terminating the strike. The Chamber of Mines lias announced that in order to slave Moddeu East mine from flooding, the power station will be restarted. This is regarded as a test of the striker threats against free labour.

WILD SCENES IN AFRICA

ARREST OF STRIKE LEADERS. CAPETOWN, Feb. 8. A mass meeting at Johannesburg called by the Federation to explain the abortive conference, with Dir Smuts, ended in wild scenes. A' resolution in favor of a general sympathetic strike was adopted. When the announcement was made the mover of the resolution and four other leaders were arrested. The meeting passed a resolution demanding the release of the arrested men. Subsequently five leaders.— Fisher, DlcDermid, Shaw, Spendiff, and DYordingbam were rertianded till the 22nd, on a. charge of incitmeiit to violence.

A later message states th e Federation decided agoing a general strike. The strikers offered no resistance to the relighting of the fires at New Klenfoiltein Dline, for the resumption of essential services.

Owing to the Federation refusing the terms offered at the Conference with Dir Smuts, the Chamber of Dlines has withdrawn the modifications then offered and reverted to the original offer. Th e Chamber explains it only made the concessions at Dir Smuts’ urgent representations with a desire to help tie whole country.

DELHI, Feb. 8.

A meeting of the Calcutta branch of the European Association resolved: — That it was time the Raj (British Government of India) came off the feilcc, to support loyal citizens, and for a Citizens' Protection League to be formed, with the object of countering civil disobedience and other activities of the N on-Co-operators. A commttee consisting of some leading Europeans and Indians was ■ appointed. POLICE FIRE ON CROWD. A serious riot is imported in the Tiruvaduthurai district, near Madras, arising out of the selection of a successor to a dead priest. A large crowd attempted to obstruct the priest’s burial. A Deputy Magistrate ordered the dispersal of the mob, which refused to disjerse. The police thereupon fired on the crowd, killing three and wounding eight. The Deputy Magistrate and a superintendent of police and a. number of police were wounded before order was restored. ■
