The sunshine and rain records at Hokitika during January month for 1921 were: Sunshine 259 hours, 42 minutes; rain 3.6 inches. For 1922 it was 273 hours 17 minutes of sunshine and 10.8 inches of rain.
The Blackball picnic excursion arrived this morning about 11 o’clock and were located on Cass Square. The Blackball Band accompanied the party and enlivened the. town with a musical programme.
The evening service at All Saints Church on Sunday will be partly of a Memorial character, to commemorate the life and work of the late Archdeacon Harper, first Vicar of this parish The preacher at the service will be the Rev Dr Holloway.
Mr H. W. Uru, the new member for the Southern Maori district, took his seat in the House of Represenatives on Wednesday afternoon. He was conducted to Mr Speaker’s chair by the HOll D, Pomare and tho Hon I. G. Coates, and was duly sworn in, after which the Speaker shook hands with him and lie signed the roll.
The six flour mills in the Dunedin district are now at a standstill. They cannot get wheat •to grind and it is expected that there will he none available for a fortnight, when the first of the new crop may be to hand. An enquiry from Oamaru brings the answer that for want of sunshine, the wheat is taking a long time to ripen. There is no shortage of flour.
At Addington stock sale on Wednesday there was a small entry of fat pigs which met with a keen demand, to which tile supply was not equal. Values were-Choppers £3 to £5, light baeoners £3 10s to £4 ss, heavy baconers £ I 10s to £O, average price per lb 6Jd, light porkers £2 15s to £3, heavy porkers £3 2s to £3 Bs, average price per lb lOd to 10Jd. A small yarding of store pigs wes forward, and prices advanced in consequence. Values were: Good stores 45s to 51s 6d, medium stores 34s to 40s, weaners 10s to 20s, small weaners 8s to 12s 6d.
General Russell and party representing the Returned Soldiers’ organisation will arrive here by motor transport at 6 o’clock this evening. The school children are to assemble to give the General a rally on arrival. At 7.30 o’clock there will ho a civic reception at the Town Hall followed by a public address by General Russell. Returned Soldiers and the band will escort tic visiting party from Keller’s hotel to the Town Hall. To-morrow forenoon the party visit Lake Kaniori, and after lunch proceed to Ross, inspecting the Rimu Flat dredge hv the way. No doubt at all points the public will join in giving the distinguished officer a very hearty reception.

According to Dr T. M. Telford, District Health Officer, the. number of, rats destroyed in the Christchurch district (Canterbury and the West Coast) reached over 5000 on Saturday. The number lias since got to about 5220.
Eightv-seven gratuities owing to returned soldiers, und representing a total amount of £2BOO odd, are still unclaimed, according to a statement made by Sir Andrew Russell at Christchurch on Wednesday evening.
