burglary and assault. WELLINGTON, Feb. 8. After a series of remands, Charles Campbell Dawkins, a young man, a Wellington University student, wlio was arrested at Christchurch, appeared before the Magistrate's Court to answer 29 informations, charging him with having committed indictable offences. Twenty-eight charges allege that accused had been carrying out extensive operations as a housebreaker from July to November. There was a further allegation that j he was the perpetrator of an assault on Dr P. F. MeEvedy, on the night of j November 29th last. Evidence was given that Dawkins admitted to tlie police that he was a housebreaker and that lie assaulted Dr MeEvedy. , Al , On being called by Mr Perry, Dawkins said he was 25 years of age. At the time that Dr MeEvedy was struck, the revolver he had in his possession was loaded. He had never fired it. I never carried it on any previous job on i which I was engaged,” said accused, who admitted that he had two other revolvers in his possession. On the day he struck Dr MeEvedy he had been cleaning out liis wardrobe, and after he had returned the goods he found he had misplaced tlie key. For; that reason he put the revolver in a handbang. Accused also gave details of breaking and entering of many houses. For some time past he had suffered from dizziness in the head, and gastric trouble. He had been oh active service for two years. Accused was committed for trial.
