The directors of the Princess Theatre Coy. Ltd. have entered into a contract with Mr Beck, scenic artist of Wellington, to carry out the renovation of the local theatre. Other internal improvements of the theatre to add to its comfort and convenience, are contemplated.

At tlie close of the Revd Mullineux’s address at the Town Hall' last night, the reverend gentleman returned to Greymouth, in order to catch the early train to-day for Reefton, as he is due to speak at Westport to-night. Before leaving Mr Mullineux met several mothers and sisters and discoursed with them privately in regard to various cemeteries where it was known relatives were buried. Mr Mullineux’s information was very complete in detail.

Mr Seddon M.P., telegraphed last night that he regretted owing to the session of Parliament now extending into next week, there would be no chance of accompanying General Russel! on his West Coast tour, as Mr Seddon had hoped to do. While on active service Captain Seddon had been on General Russell’s stall' on France, and it would have been a great pleasure to be again with the General. Mr Seddon very much regrets his personal inability to be present in the electorate when so distinguished a visitor will be in the district. It was anticipated, states the New Zealand “Times”, that there would be little revenue collected from spirits for some months, as it rvas alleged that heavy clearance had been made in anticipation of the 100 per cent increase in the duty. Of course, this was a reasonable conjecture because all business people clear as large quantities of goods as possible if a higher duty is anticipated; but the revenue under the new tariff is already substantial. The new duty on spirits became operative on November 4th, 1921, and I from November Ist to December 31st, 11921, the total spirit duty collected for I the whole of New Zealand was £61,701 l()s lid, of which £19,963 9s 2d was collected at the rate of 36s per gallon. When nearly £20,000 was collected under the new increased tariff before the end of the year the anticipation ttyat no revenue under this head would be collected for eighteen months or two years was groundless. It seems now to be pretty accurate that not more than six weeks’ or two months’ supply . of spirits was, or is, at any time under bond, and that is borne out by the customs returns so far. In one of the strong rooms enclosed in the old Court buildings gutted bylire yesterday morning, was the stock of the local Defence Office of ball cartridge, some thousands of rounds. The strongroom is intact, but the door has been warped by the heat of the lire, and at present has not been able to be opened. It will probably be found necessary to force the door fastenings.

An inspection of the gutted building, the scene of yesterday’s fire, causes much surprise at the limited amount of damage done and helps to show the excellent work of the Brigade, witli the capital water supply that was at thenservice on the occasion. When the Brigade reached the scene, Bmartly after the alarm was given, the flames were roaring through the roof in great volume, but once the water was laid on the outbreak was soon got under, and now it appears hardly credible that with such a fierce blaze the damage done should have been of such a limited extent, especially as the woodwork was nil Baltic pine, notable for its inflammable nature.

Word was received from Wanganui yesterday afternoon announcing the deatli of Mr Thomas Orr, bookseller and stationer, of that town. Deceased was a member of the well-known On’ family of .Hokitika, and was a native of the place. His health iiad been very precarious for the last two or three yea.rs, and the news of his sudden death did not take his relatives in Hokitika by surprise. Deceased was 46 years of age, leaves a wife and brothers and sisteis who are Robert and Frank, the wellknown motor carriers of Hokitika; William and Alexander in Wellington; Mis Feilterberg in South Africa; Mrs Mann of Melbourne; and Mrs Watson, of Reef ton, to all of whom we extend our sympathy to them, the first break in the family tie of this generation.
