Eight times the Conelave of Cardinals passed to vote, and four times the wisps of black smoke ascended informing the waiting throngs that .they were still without a Pope. The crowds were ever increasing; as if the whole world had gathered iu the Square. Should Mondays smoke be white, the surge of the people to the Bascilica to hear the new Pope is likely to result in casualties, to meet which ambulance and first aid stations have been installed in the Square.
RATTI, ARCHBISHOP OF MILAN
TAKES NAME OF PIUS XI. (Received This Day at 9.40 a.m.) LONDON, Feb. 6. The Exchange Telegraph Agency announces Ratti, Archbishop of Milan, has been elected Pope. He takes the name of Pius XI. Other sources confirm the news. The new Pope, Achilles Ratti, was bora in 1858, was ordained priest 1879 and had a distinguished career as an educationalist and ecclesiastic,. possessing great culture. He served successfully as prefect of the famous Amhrosion Library in Milan and was proprefect of the Vatican Library. He won the special confidence of the Pope who sent him to Poland in April 1918, as an Apostolic visitor, becoming Apostolic Nunci'o when , Poland - became a Republic. He rendered humane services, securing the release of prisoners from Russia. Ratti is regarded as a sportsman. He gained fame asf an Alpinist and is a member of the Italian Alpine Club.
