QUARTER’S FIGURES
WELLINGTON, Feb. 2. The accounts of the Consolidated Fund published in to-night’s “Gazette” show that tae ordinary revenue for last quarter was £6,074,082 against £7,800,644 in the corresponding qpar-j ter of the previous year. Details are:—• Dec. Dec. quarter quarter
Miscellaneous - 268,150 201,573 The expenditure shows: —Permanent appropriations £3,404,371; annual appropriations, £3,749,384 agpjnst £4,- 1 375,901. The expenditure in the Civil | List shows a slight reduction: Interest and sinking fund total £51,906,934 against £2,454,006 in the December quarter of 1920. Subsidies to local bodies and hospitals show a, combined decrease <of £27,000. All pension payments show increases except those under the War Act, 1915, which decrease from £450,139 to £385,966. In annual appropriations the great majority of the departments show decreases; working railways, £35,000,; post and telegraphs, £200,000; internal affairs, £84,923 against £244,442; printing and stationary department shows a credit of £lBBl against an expenditure in the December quarter of 1920 qf £26,138; mental hospitals dropped £15,000; naval defence increased £27,000; defence department dropped £6,(XX); agricultural department £69,661; against £500,260; education, department £685,335 against £760,969. The expenditure in the Nauru and Ocean Islands account in the Consolidated Fund for last quarter was £66,474 compared with £640,244 in the De- . cember quarter 1920. The annual appropriation is £19,112. Phosphates sold realised £20,134.

QUESTIONS-IN-THE HOUSE. WELLINGTON, Feb. 3. That the General Manager of Railways should visit the South Island and see for himself the effect of the cuts that have been* made was a request by Mr G. W. Forbes when the railway estimates were being considered. He held tliat the cuts had not resulted in economy and had caused very much inconvenience. The cuts could not be effective unless the railway users’ point of view were known as well as that o the Department.
