M.M.A.S. MELBOURNE, RECEPTION TO OFFICERS. WELLINGTON, Jan 31. A most enthusiastic civic reception was given to Rear-Admiral Dumaresq, Flag-Captain Feakes, and the officers of the Melbourne. The Mayor (Mr R. A. Wright) presided. Mr Massey and Mr Wilford were present, the Prime Minister extending a welcome on behalf of the Government and people of Now Zealand. In his reply, Admiral Dumaresq said it would be well to remember that navies were necessary, also the old saying that trade followed the flag. There was an inseparable link between them. He made a strong plea for closer cooperation between New Zealand and Australia, and hopoed there would be an interchange of visits between t-ie navy units. Co-operation between Australia and New Zealand would benefit both. “Hand in hand should be the policy of Australia, and New Zealand” said the Mayor.
