N.Z. INSTITUTE, WELLINGTON, January 31. The annual meeting of the New Zealand Institute is being held to-day. , Professor Easterfield of the Cawthorn ' Institute, in a presidential address ; dealt upon the 'need of more co-opera-tion among New Zealand; .scientific men in the interests of scientific research. He trusted that the Institute would be able to 00-operate with the American National Research Council upon certain problems of the Pacific Ocean. It was difficult to see how great progress in' the matter of organisation of researches could be made without financial assistance and it would certainly appear the time had come for some Complete change of policy in New Zealand, owing to the changed! financial dltuation. It was worth while asking the various societies affiliated for suggestions as to how best to foster the research spirit.

j In the, Magistrate’s Qourt to-day, j Harold Vincent McSwceney appeared i to answer a judgment summons issued j by the Jockeys’ Association for unpaid ; fees.
1 McSweeney said that he earnod only about £l5O since the judgment was obtained in July last, but when under cross-exam i n altion admitted that the list of mounts totalling about £3lO since August was practically correct, but said his expenses had been heavy. He denied having any betting transactions with bookmakers. Magistrate Hunt sentenced McSweeney to 19 days’ imprisonment, the order to be suspended on payment of £2 per month.
DEATH UNDER ANAESTHE'L'IC.
WELLINGTON, January 31
Jane Kai'hi, a widow aged 58, collapsed and died under an anaesthetic at Brougham Street private hospital while being operated on for goitre. She leaves no known relatives.

At the inquest, j a verdict of death from hemorrhage of j the lungs was returned. Deceased was j aged 72, and leaves a daughter.
