A farmer near Dinant, in France, drowned Ida four children, aged from eight years to 20 months, one by one in a pond near his farm house. He then jumped in himself; but when he realised that he was nearly drowning, he clutched an overhanging branch. When rescued, four hours later, he declared that he tad murdered his children in order to teach his wife a lesson. The family owned a prosperous farm. When the farmer took to drink ing excessively, the wife, fearing injury, took refuge in her parents home and refused to return. The day after the husband’-s crime she gave birth to a fifth child. She is not expected to .live.
FROZEN PIGEONS. LONDON, January 30
A small experimental shipment from New South Wales of frozen pigeons fins proved very satisfactory on the London market. The Hulk. iof then fetched Is 6d each, and a few were sold at Is. The Smithfield salesmen are pleased at the size and quality of the pigeons. They think that good business is possible, especially in the summer time.

The Ministry of Agriculture has stopped the movement of cattle in eleven counties.
U-BOAT PRISONER
ESCAPES TN GERMANY. BERLIN, Jan. 30 Lieut Leitman, who was sentenced by the Leipzig Court for sinking the hospital ship Llandovery Castle, has escaped from Lemburg gaol, with the assistance of some of a gang of former U-boat officers, who recently helped Coldt to escape. Leitman enjoyed special privileges. After his warder had been bribed, lie scaled his prison wall, and jumped into a waiting motorcar. ' The German Government is offering a reward for Leitman’s re-capture.
