Harold Johnson’s homestead at Waitahora, a nine roomed wooden structure, was completely destroyed by fire. Mr and Mrs Johnson were absent on holiday at the time. The house was valued at £2,500 and contents between £I2OO and £I3OO. Insured in National Office for £I3OO, furniture and contents £750 in same office.

A disastrous fire occurred in 7the early hours of the morning. which completely gutted two of the largest shops in the centre of the business portion of the town. The fire started in E. C. Goldstone’s drapery store and communicated itself to C. A. Wilkinson’s hardware store adjoining. A northerly gale rendered the Brigade’s efforts unavailing. The whole premises were owned by Wilkinson. Insurances —ln Phoenix £4OO on stock; Wilkinson £3OO in Phoenix; Goldstone Phoenix £6,000; Atlas £2,000; Royfjl £1,000; Standard £1,000; Alliance £900; South British £7,000; Queensland £4OO.

The loss is estimated at over £20,000 A YOUTHFUL FORGER. AUCKLAND, Jan. 31. A young man, aged 18, employed at the National Bank, was charged at the Police Court with theft and forgery involving nearly £340, and was committed to the Supreme Court for sentence. Accused admitted that he stole a cheque and opened an account in .his own name in the savings bank and subsequently witdrew the money. That he drew a cheque for £250 forging the name of the Chairman. This he also deposited in his own name in the savings hank. He realised he had done wrong and burned his bank book. The name of the accused was ordered not to be published on account of his youth.
