DISTRICT MATTERS.
The following corresjxmdence in respect to various matters has been re--ceived by the local Chamber of Commerce in reply to representations made by the Chamber to the Department referred to:—
BRUCE BAY LANDING. The Secretary, Marine Department* writes:—
I am. directed by the Minister of Marine to acknowledge receipt of your -letter of the 13th inst. in. connection with the Bruoe Bay Landing, and in reply have to state that the survey necessary to enable this work to be carried out has, along with’ other works, been held up- owing to heavy pressure of work on the staff. Arrangements have, however, been made for assistance for the Staff, and the Survey will he carried out immediately. As soon as the report is received the work will be expedited. POST OFFICE STATUS.
The Secretary to the General Post Office, Wellington, wries:— In reference to your letter Of the 19th ultimo, regarding the status of the" Hokitika post office: I have the honour to inform you that the Hokitika, Greymouth and Westport postal districts have been amalgamated from the Ist inst; and will in future be controlled from Greymouth. The new arrangement will result in economy,-and enable the three postal districts to be efficiently administered from Greymouth. In regard to the objection to the ' change on the ground that the transfer of the post office savings-bank ledger accounts from Hokitika would cause delay to depositors seeking withdrawals arrangements have been
made for savings bank ledgers to be
. kept at Hokitika for local savings ' bank accounts, thus enabling withdrawals to continue to be made on demand. This system is in operation elsewhere in New Zealand, and is found to work satisfactorily. The residents of Hokitika trill still have all the postal facilities and the
telegraph facilities usually granted at
a place at which there is a chief office. REAFFORESTATION IN WESTLAND The Hon Commissioner of State Forests, Sir F. D. Bell, writes: — I have the honour to acknowledge the receipt of your leter of the 12th inst. conveying the representations of the Westland Chamber of Commerce relative to the above. In reply I have to inform you that the State Forest Service has already in hand the matter referred to by your Chamber, and is arranging to establish an experimental station on a large reserve near Hokitika, If the results of the experiments and investigations that will he made prove to be favourable, . further operations will be proceeded with to the full extent which the financial resources of the State Forest will allow. May I:say that lam glad to see that . such an active interest is being manifested by the Westland people in this important matter.
