The vital match for the Sheffield Shield commenced to-day on a good wicket, New South Wales requiring a substantial margin to win the Shield. Victoria in the first innings made 265. O’Keefe scored 87, Sand ford 48, Hartkoff 43, and Lampard 2£). Jn the howling, Scott took five for 74, and Kelleway three for 42. New South Wales in the first strike lost one wicket for 46, Collins (not out) 23. O’Keefe, after several narrow escapes, played carefully and scored 87, taking 207 minutes to compile them. Sandford gave an cr. tertnining innings, jumping out to the bowlers, and knocking up his 48 in as many minutes.
