aUBTUALIAft AND ft.Z. CABLE ASSOCIATION. DUKE OF YORK; (Received This Day at 10.15 d.in.) LONDON, Jan. 26.
■ The Duke of York was the guest of honour at the Australia Day luncheon. Sir J. Cook presiding, warmly welcomed | the Duke of York, and assured him he ; would have a great welcome if lie could I see his way to visit Australia. The ! Duke replying, said like the rest of his family, he felt he belonged as much , to Australia and New Zealand, as to the Motherland. The invitation strengthened the belief that these seni timents were reciprocated. His knowi ledge of their great country was limited to the results of reading, and , what his brother had told hi.iiij bi'tt , lie could assure them that when eirj cunistances allowed, and good fortune j favoured him, Australia would receive I no more willing and interested visitor ; than himself. He had learned of New Zealand’s country of magnificent scenery, as attractive as one might find anywhere. When Phillip landed at Port Jacksons 134 years ago he could not have foreseen lfow swiftly the country would grow in greatness. When the Allzttc soldiers were seen walking in oilr streets, we liked to recognise ill his lithe stalwart figure, the epitolne of British bleeding, tinder a kindlier suit aiid iii frdcr air tliaii was possible in these more crowded islands; With, the famous Anzacs, whose deeds added such lustre and imperishable renown, Australia* and New Zealand each had very good grounds for faith in herself.
On Sir James Allen’s motion, a vote of thanks to the Duke of York for his speech was carried.
