Speaking at a luncheon tendered ihim by the National Association, Air Hughes said lie proposed to issue an invitation to employers and organised Labour to a conference to discuss matters in contention between them, as lie feared that if this were not done without delay. Official figures available unofficially, stated the miners’ ballot on the nine days fortnight proposal resulted in the decisive defeat of the proposal. BASIC WAGE. SYDNEY, Jan. 26. The Board of Trade sits on the 2nd February to reconsider the declaration of the recent basic wage of £4 2s for a'dult males.
COLLIERY OWNERS OFFER. SYDNEY, Jan. 26. Colliery proprietors invited representatives of the men to confer on the question of reducing wages, reduced cost of living and reduction of wages. Some other industries have given as reasons for the requests which the miners consider at a meeting on the 31st. COST OF PRODUCTION. SYDNEY, Jan. 26. Lysaghts galvanized ironworks at Newcastle announce that- owing to the high cost of production making it impossible to compete with imported articles, they will probably close in February, rendering idle over 400 employees.

(Received This Day at 11.30 a.m.) MELBOURNE January 26. Medical evidence at the. inquest proved Tirtschke was outraged. Matnews in her evidence, stated Ross was in the habit of tampering with young girls, and admitted to her that he outraged Tirtschka. Other witnesses testified to seeing the girl in Ross’s wine bar shortly before her disappearance.
BUTTER POOL REFUSED. MELBOURNE, January 20. A conference of representatives of co-operative butter factories rejected proposals to form a Victorian butter pool.
