IMPERIAL AIR SERVICE. (Received This Day at 9.40 a.m.) LONDON, Jan. 25. The fate of the Imperial air service is in the balance. India’s reply is eagerly awaited as its verdict decides the issue. The Air Ministry states it is not advised of India’s decision. It is believed it is not yet taken. It is understood that cables passed between Mr Hughes and India in that connection, it is hoped with good effect. The Air Ministry states New Zealand and South Africa turned down the scheme owing to the state of the finances. It . was known that Mr Massey was not ! enthusiastic at the time of the Conferj ence and it is believed he subsequently 1 confirmed the decision. There is great disappointment in local air circles, though New Zealand’s inclusion is not ‘ essential to the inauguration of the service. South Africa is only a branch line. Amateur golfers, by an overwhelming majority, voted in favour of the suggested new amateur rule, that qualifying rounds of the amateur championship be decided by stroke instead of match play. 247 competitors in the championships of 1920 and 1921 were ' circularised with the result that 129 favoured the proposal, 19 were against, while 99 did not reply. A petition was presented to the authorities forthwith requesting the change to govern the : 1922 championship at Prestwick in 1 May.
