A narrow escape from drowning occurred last Monday at the bathing place in the Inangahua river near Reefton Hospital. A party of young ladies were having a bathe, which was most enjoyable after the extremely hot afternoon. One, who could not swim very well, was being assisted across by another young lady, and the latter getting tired, turned on her back for relief. The other, thinking she was being left, grabbed her companion, and thus prevented her swimming, with the result that both went to the bottom. Mr W. Saddler, who was standing nearby, went in with his clothes on and brought one girl from the bottom of the river and the other managed to scramble out after being liberated _ by her companion. Another fatality would have been chronicled, but for the prompt action of Mr Saddler. IVben got to terra firma the young lady was in an unconscious state, but was brought round alter some time, and is little the worse for her experience.
