, GREYMOUTH, Jan. 24. At the Magistrate’s Court yesterday before Mr W. Meldrum S.M., Dan McCarthy charged wth book-maldng pleaded not guilty After hearing evidence defendant was committed to the supreme Court at Greymouth for trial;, reserved his defence. In reply to the Magistrate, Detective Young said the police had no objection to bail, as McCarthy was well-known in the town and had a, good character. Bail was fixed self in £SO and one surety of £SO. David Forbes was charged with steal-, ing one gold brooch value lOsj one purse value 6s; and £1 in money the property of Mrs Rowe, at Greym 011th 011 January 10th. Accused pleaded guilty, and was convicted and ordered to pay a total of £2 I4s 6d, the- value of the articles stolen and the cost of transporting accused from Barrytown to Greymouth. He would be liable to be called upon to come up for sentence within six months, but if he returned to work and behaved himself he would hear no more of the matter. One week was granted Forbes in which to pay the amount Basil Tyler,' wh|o did not appear, was charged with converting to his own use a bicycle, the property of Frank B. Lawn, on December 26. Senior Sergeant McCarthy stated the cycle was taken from a right-of-way in Tainui street. Tyler late r ad- ( mitted taking the machine, but said that somebody sold it to him. Tyler was convicted and fined £2 and costs.
