The newspapers here are of the opinion that Gardinal Gasparri (Papal Secretary of State) will be the next Pope. REPORTS AND RUMOURS. POPE’S CLOSING HOURS. (Received This Day at 8 a.m.) LONDON, January 21. A 10 p.m. telegram from Rome states the extreme unction was administered • at two, in the morning. Early in the forenoon, after an hour’s sleep, the Pope took liquid refreshment and revived the faintest hope of his reeov ery. His lucidity during the early part of the day was a remarkable feature of the illness. He become delirious at noon, insisting on rising to resume work., Later a state of coma commenced wherefrom he never gained consciousness. Death occurred at 4.45 Rome time. LONDON, January 21. At 11 .55 late editions of London and Pnpis evening papers announced the Pope’s death about 4.45, which Italian correspondents news agencies confirmed but Rome messages despatched at eight o’clock reported to be premature the Pope ’bfedng then alive, in a state of coma and not expected to last another hour. Cardinal Gesparii informed members of the Sacred College assembled in the Pope’s ante room, after medical consultation at six o’clock that the Pope’s condition during the day had grown worse and respiration was more difficult, the heart growing weaker. LONDON January 20. A 2.50 a.m. Rome message states the ' Pope rallied at eight o’clock and may last out the night. ANNOUNCED TOO EARLY. (Received This Day at 8 a.m.) LONDON, January 22. The authorities of Westminster Cathedral received three Vatican telegrams on Saturday. The third, arriving about six, announced the Pope’s death, whereupon the bells were tolled at Westminster and Southwark Cathedrals. Berlin wa s also misled, the Pope’s •death being announced in the Reichstag. The Papal Nuncio at Paris issued a denial on Saturday night stating there has been no information from the Vatican, up till ten o’clock. LONDON, January 22. An 8.45 a.m. Paris telegram says the newspapers announce that the Pope died at six o’clock. HOW THE END CAME. (Received This Day at 8.30 a.m.) ROME, Jan. 22. The Pope’s death throes began at 5.20' and the last absolution was givon by Cardinal Giorgia. Cardinal Gasparri was called at 5.30 because the Pope had fallen into a state of coma. Doctor Cherubini pronounced death occurred at six o’clock. NEWS REACHES LONDON. (Received This Day at 10.15 a.m.) LONDON, January 2-’ The authorities at Westminster Cathedral, during high mass this morning received a telegram from Cardinal Gasparri announcing the Pope’s death.
