During the discussion o.n the Imprest Supply Bill fo-pight Mr M’Combs asked, fpy particulars of the Otira Tunnel electrifteation contract, and whether there was a strict time limit, because it was highly desirable that through raihyay communication should be provided a rtf interest earned on the hpge sum lying idle. The ivfinister of Public Works replied, that the cp.ptract time was eighteen months, b.u.t was delayed owing to tl>P English coal strike. The foundations fpy the machinery were being put in, and they anticipated having the machinery b.V April. It was expected - fha,t clectriffeiatipn would be completed before the end' of this year.
Replying tp a question Mr Coatee safd, it A'’()phi bp impossible to dfepend on hydro-electric power. They would not feel safe until a steam plant was ready tp generate 1600 kilowatts. It would cost £Bop,,f)C)o. to complete the tunnel, £382,000 for electrification and further expeiuliiture would be necessary ifloy boilers, foundations and houses), which the- Public Works 'Department • was providing.
