AUCKLAND, Jan 19. | The Taiipiri Extended Coal Mine at ■ Hnntly, was idle to-day .This was owing , to a notification by the Railway De- j partment that it could not continue to •purchase 500 tons of steam coal, as j under the existing contract. ! Tn reply to representations by the Hon Mr Alison, it is stated that owing . to large stocks of coal being in hand, j and other stocks to arrive, the contract could not be continued. This statement refers, of course to extensive committments made bv the Government (owing, it is claimd, to th ( > m icrs late “go-slow”). Tt is expected that the Rotowaro Mine will be idle to-morrow. The com- j pany state the termination of th c contract will necessitate each of its mines being idle for ono day a week. |

Association unanimously resolutioned against tlq. proposed cut in salaries, pointing out that the civil service was apparently being compelled to pay the rebate granted to the payers of land tax, and expressing tho opinion that if the money was needed, to alleviate the financial stringency it should be raised by universal taxation of incomes over a certain amount.

The Senate ratified the Recess Committee’s decision to allow Returned 1 Soldier candidates for L.L.B. to sit for university examination in subjects of the first division without having a college examination.
