Salary Reductions.

ONE-THIRD OF THE BONUS

WELLINGTON, January 16. Many doubts and apprehensions will | probably be settled definitely to-morrow by the-"appearance of a Bill to make ' provision for the Public Service. The retrenchment policy will be in the Bill, but many details will have to be provided .for otherwise by administrative measures. Details of the proposals are withheld but it is safe to say that no section of .the Services will escape. The only dividing line will be that of the amount of pay. Some put this lino at £250, others at £3OO. Below that line there will be a reduction according to the agreement under which the cost of living bonuses were granted. There is some authority for saying that approximately one-third 'of the bonus will come off, as it is understood this is about the- sum to be taken in reduction of the bonuses . granted to the teachers. I Strange as it may appear, the fact that Ministers and members of Par- : liament will suffer as great a reduction J proportionately as any others in re- j ceipt of pay from the State is believed ; to be one of the factors which will greatly assist the passage of the Bilk . Members who realise the need for j economy would, probably he chary about enforcing it unless they began on themselves. 1 The saving to be effected by retrenchment is variously estimated, but the only estimate that has any official sanction is the very vague one that I the saving will go a good way to help ( in making up the leeway. *
