MARORO IN TROUBLE-. (Received This Day at 8 a.m.) SYDNEY, Jan. 16.—Arrived, Maroro from Gisborne. When 500 Iniles from Sydney on 2nd January, the ship struck a gale, and the rudder was carried away and for four days the vessel was at the mercy of the storm. Then a temporary rudder was rigged, and the ship headed for Sydney. They later secured the services of a tug, and were .towed in. MELBOURNE ITEMS. MELBOURNE, Jan. 16. The Commonwealth loan being lloated in London is for public works, already authorised. The Premiers’ Conference opens tomorrow. The chief subjects for discussion are uniform railway guage and immigration. In view of the imperial stocks of Australian butter having been largely cleared, the Dairying Pool Committee have decided .that no further action be taken to secure Government assistance to finance the unsold balance.
