A Wellington correspondent states the Minister of Health is encountering considerable trouble over a provision in the Hospital Bill making appointments by hospital boards subject to ministerial approval. There is so much opposition to the clause from his own side of the House that lie will find it impossible to carry it through committee, despite his strenuous advocacy of control, in view of the fact that the Government pays nearlv half the salaries of hospital employees.
Amended regulations in respect to the promotion of chaplains to the New Zealand military forces are published in the “ Gazette.” Paragraph 118 of the regulations is revoked, and the following substituted “ A chaplain may bo promoted, provided he has the necessary qualifying service and lias been recommended for promotion as under: After ten years’ service, to chaplain third-class. Promotion to chaplain, second-class, will be by selection. In normal times no promotion to chaplain, first-class, will be made, but undei exceptional circumstances, when such promotions may be necessary, they will be made by selection.”
At Friday’*s meeting of the New Zealand Trotting Association, the Greymouth Trotting Club reported having held an equiry into the running of Merry Peter in the Dunollie Handicap on the second day of the Club’s Summer Meeing as compared with hi > form in the Unhoppled Handicap on the first day. A considerable quantity of evidence was taken, and the Judicial Committee came to the conclusion that, though the case was surrounded by some suspicion and the evidence given was unsatsfactory, there was not sufficient evidence to warrant any definite action being taken. The decision of tho Club was endorsed.

A rather curious accideiit happened to a lad named Shaw in Westport on Wednesday evening last. While reashing up to light a gas-jet a fair-sized moth flew into the drum of his ear, and despite efforts made by by-stand-ers to extract it the insect could not bo removed. The lad was taken to Dr Foote, who also found difficulty in removing the. moth, but was eventually successful. When removed the moth was| found to be still ulive.
