Retrenchment.
TEACHERS MUST SHARE BURDEN. CABINET’S DECISION. [BY TELEGRAPH —rEH PHESB ASSOCIATION’] WELLINGTON, Jan. 14. To date, the teachers had been left in doubt as to what is tbe fate of the general retrenchment proposals. All they have learned was from a remark by the Minister of Education before Christmas. The teachers were not referred to in the statement of the Prime Minister, and, in fact, the Cabinet had not then considered this point.
Now, however, the Cabinet have considered the matter, and have definitely decided that the teachers will have to bear their share of the burden of the day.
The reductions for teachers will he on a different basis to the reductions in the other Departments of the Public Service. It is authoritively stated that it will be equal to the actual reductions in the cost of living, since the bonus was given to the teachers. The percentage of such" 1 reduction will be based on the Government Statistician’s figures.
