BALANCE SHEETS AND WAGE ADJUSTMENTS. HASTINGS, January 11. A meeting of the Hastings branch of the Post and Telegraph Officers’ Association carried the following motions unanimously: (1) That if the precedent of requiring State Departments to furnish financial balance-sheets is to be made permanent in accordance with the demands made by commercial and farming bodies, then we request 'that the functions of every State service should be reviewed and placed on a paying basis, or, where deemed necessary, subsidised in the interests of development. 'Every such case should be a burden on the Consolidated Fund. (2) That this section calls upon the executive to strongly oppose any reduction in salaries which would impose an unfair special taxation on us ns workers, while not being uniformly shared by all members of the community. While we can point to the remission of taxes to others above the bread and butter line of living, and until the legislation of the country provides specially for the rearing of families, we will strenuously oppose any political move to. impose a flat rate of adjustment which does not take into consideration the family responsibilities of those concerned.
