FIRE R-IGADES AND ECONOMY. Replying to Mr Holland, the Hon. W. Downie Stewart said he had referred some of the proposed economies connected with fire brigades, back to Cabinet .for (review. He understood that brigades "bad entered into certain obligations which could not be met if the full economies were carried out and .»e did not wish to put the brigades in that position. RAILWAYS SUPERANNUATION FUND. The report of the Government Railways Superannuation Board states that the allowances paid during the year amounted to £109,£81, representing grants to 1152 members voluntarily resigned or retired as medically unfit. The sum of £12,752 was paid in respect to 413 widows and 561 children, dependants of deceased members who had not , retired on superannuation at the time | of their death, and 57,797 was refunded to members who voluntarily retired or whose sen*ices were dispensed with during the year. The balance to the credit of the fund at March last was £464,400.
