•MAIN 'EFFORTS THIS YEAR. ‘AUSTRALIAN AND N.Z. CARLE ASSOCIATION. LONDON December 27. Colonel Howard Bury ‘the leader of the expedition that recently reconnoitred tlie approach to Mount Everest had an audience to-day with the King and told the story of the expedition to the Royal Geographical Society and the Alpine Club in the presence of the Duke of York this evening. Sir ‘Francis Youiighushand announced that an artist would accompany the main expedition in 1922. Tlu- cost of the recent reconnaissance was expected to be £SOOO. This expense had been rendered possible in tbe first instance by the generosity of the King patron the Trince iff Wales, vice-patron, and the Alpine Club which had contributed £3oo*.
Colonel Howard Bury mainly traversed. the graphic despatches already cabled, entrancing his hearers with word pictures of the scenes. “The Times” in a leader, points out that tlie data obtained will he most useful to General Bruce, wltfo is to lead the .main expedition. Mr Malory and Mr Bullock consider that the chances are 50 to 1 against any expedit' sealing Mount Everest, if given a year, but they are inclined fo think that the last 3000 ft given good weather and surface snow conditions, may be accomplished if Die copies can stand the work rif establishing a properly stored camp at a height of 26,000 ft.
