The spokesman of the Indian delegation visiting Fiji, said the object of inquiries Was to find the .cause of the unrest which lay behind the recent strikes. Although the system of indentured labour was ended, there are many labourers in Fiji, against their wills, hnving been enticed there by false promises. It is common thing for young people to find themselves lost at large gatherings in India and recruiting agents undertook to take home the unfortunate wanderers. Later they found themselves in Fiji, where they were practically slaves. Lately they were informed they would be paid only the prewar wages. Their treatment is regarded as a slight upon the people of India. All they asked was if these men were not paid decent wages, they should bo sent home again.
