A curious spectacle was witnessed at Wellington on the arrival of the Marama from Sydney, when a number, of Chinese men ,<nd women garbed in their national costume made their way about the boat. Most of the women were wearing the Celestial trousers, whilst a young Chinaman, evidently desiring to keep in with European custom was wearing suspenders on the outside of his trousers. Another woman, having recently “donned” European hoots, kept looking at her new foot attire in seeming disgust. Of the number of Celestials three were Japanese. They are on their way from their native land to Papeete.

“Within the last week or so,” states the “Public Service Journal,” “several married temporary officers have had their employment terminated at the end of a few days’ notice. Some of them have been continually in the department’s employ for five years or longer, some of them have five little ones dependent on their earnings, and some, more. All are to make way for other men transferred from another section of the service and whose service is shorter than their own, whose domestic responsibilities are less and whose suitability for the new class of work is problematical. What a Christmas box to receive after five or six years’ service! Three or four days in which to find other employment in an ovorstacked labour market. Surely five or six years’ continuous service entitles an employee to something better than this? Surely a married man with several of a family has claims on departmental consideration superior to this?” Recommended bv the medical pro fesHion. -WOLFE'S SCHNAPPS.
